Մայրիկ ու Հայրիկ

MAY-rik oo HAY-rik

Parents who understand more than they speak

Maybe Armenian skipped a generation, or it only comes out at Tatik's table. Every card spells out how to say the word, so you learn right alongside your kids.

Տատիկ ու Պապիկ

TA-tik oo PA-pik

Grandparents who carry the words

Tatik and Papik already know every word. The cards turn them into a little game for every visit, and the My Family cards hold real photos of the real Tatik.

Ընտանիք

Families wherever home is

Glendale, Watertown, Montreal, Marseille, Beirut, Buenos Aires. Download, print at home and keep Armenian close. The cards are Eastern Armenian, written the way families really talk.

Try the tissue trick. Some letters come in pairs, one with a puff of air and one without, like Կ and Ք. Hold a tissue in front of your lips: only the puffy ones make it flutter.

        Print, cut, play

        1. Print

At actual size (100%), on cardstock if you have it. Any home printer works.

        2. Cut

Two cuts along the dashed lines make four cards from every page.

        3. Laminate optional

Laminated cards survive snack time, car seats and years of little hands.

        4. Say it together

Read the sound-it-out line under each word. Capital letters show the stress.

Bright for the fridge. Easy on ink.

Every pack comes in full color and in an ink-saver version that prints crisp in black and white. Each group keeps its own shape, so cards stay easy to sort without any color at all.

        Ways families use them

        • Stick Everyday Parent Phrases on the fridge and say each one as it happens.
        • Punch a corner and keep a ring of cards in the diaper bag or the car.
        • Line up Daily Routine as a chart little ones can follow on their own.
        • Add real photos to My Family, so the Tatik card shows your Tatik.
        • Hand the ink-saver Colors cards to a little artist with a box of crayons.

        Hi, I'm Pamela

I'm a designer and art director, and I'm learning Armenian right alongside my little one. I made these cards for our own kitchen table, so a grown-up who's still learning can read every word out loud with confidence.

Roots & Crayons is for every family keeping Armenian close, wherever home is. Thank you for bringing these words into yours.

        Questions families ask

Do I need to speak Armenian?

Not at all. Every card shows the English word and an easy sound-it-out line, and capital letters show which part to stress. You can say each word with confidence the first time.

        Which Armenian is this?

Eastern Armenian, with pronunciations that follow how many Iranian-Armenian (Parskahayeren) families speak at home. If your family speaks Western Armenian, tell us when you sign up. We're counting requests for a Western edition.

What size are the cards, and how do I laminate them?

Four cards fit on each US Letter page, and each card is about 3.6 × 4.9 inches. Print at actual size (100%). On A4 paper, choose “Fit to page.”

To laminate, cut the cards first, slide them into a pouch with a little space between them, run it through, then trim around each card. The sealed edges last much longer.

Will they print in black and white?

Yes. Every pack comes with an ink-saver version made for black-and-white printers. Each group keeps its own shape, so sorting still works without color, and the outlines double as coloring pages.

Can I use them in my classroom?

The family packs are for one household. For a classroom, Saturday school or tutoring group, the classroom license covers every pack with unlimited copies for your students.

        Is anything shipped?

No. Everything is an instant download, so you can print as many copies as your family needs, any time a card gets loved to pieces.
